Stamps or points: which loyalty card should you choose?

Stamps reward frequency, points reward spending, and cashback returns part of the amount as money. None is better in itself: the right choice depends on what your customers buy and how you take payment. Krealo Wallet offers all three in Apple Wallet and Google Wallet.

The stamp card: frequency

One stamp per visit or purchase, a reward after 8, 10 or 12. Customers understand the rule at a glance and it scans quickly at the counter. It suits businesses where every purchase is worth about the same: coffee, a haircut, a car wash, a class.

Its weakness: a customer who spends $5 and another who spends $80 earn the same stamp. If your baskets vary a lot, look at points.

Points and cashback: spending

In points mode the customer earns a number of points per dollar spent, which you set. Points are added automatically when the order comes from Shopify or the API (the card adds the amount); at the counter you enter the points to add. They also drive levels (for example Bronze, Silver, Gold) that climb with the total earned and never drop when the customer spends their points.

In cashback mode a percentage of each purchase is added to a dollar balance the customer then spends with you. It’s the easiest to understand, but also the one that costs the most directly: pick a percentage your margin can bear.

Rewarding more often, and how to choose

In either mode you can define tiers: 5 stamps for a coffee, 10 for a meal, or 100 points for a discount and 300 for a gift. Rewards that are close by keep occasional customers interested.

Three questions to decide: are your purchases about equal in value? (stamps) Do you also sell online, with varying baskets? (points, with Shopify) Do you want to give back money rather than a gift? (cashback). You can switch rule later by creating a new card; the old cards keep working.

Frequently asked questions

Can I run a stamp card and a points card together?

Yes. You create several cards, each with its own rules, within the card limit of your plan.

Do points expire?

Not by default. If you turn on the expiry rule, a customer’s balance goes back to zero after the number of days without a visit that you choose (from 30 to 1,095), and a message warns them seven days before. The card itself can also have an expiry date.

Which is simplest for my team?

Stamps: one scan, one stamp. For points at the counter, the employee types a number; with Shopify or the API it’s automatic.

Can I convert stamps into points?

Not automatically. You can add stamps or points by hand in the customer’s record, which lets you carry over the balance of an old card.
